The DIGINARCH-AI project aims to offer concrete solutions to the objectives defined in the area of archival heritage protection and the digitization of state archives, as set out in the National Concept for the Development of State Archives with a Horizon to 2028, prepared by the Ministry of the Interior of the Slovak Republic and approved by Resolution No. 456/2022 of the Government of the Slovak Republic on 13 July 2022.
Specifically, the project focuses on the modernization of state archives through content digitization with the aim of increasing the quality and scope of services provided, as well as on the protection of archival documents and the implementation of current modern information technologies.
At the same time, in view of the ever-emerging challenges faced by the Slovak Republic in the field of migration policy, the project also aims to provide more comprehensive data on the implementation and impacts of the most extensive population migration in modern Slovak history, which took place between 1945 and 1948.
Project outputs will include:
• digitized and preserved collections of the branches of the Slovak Settlement Office deposited in the State Archives in Košice and Banská Bystrica (amounting in total to approximately 58 linear metres)
• a universal model for the automatic transcription of historical typewritten documents of Slovak provenance from the mid-20th century, achieving a character-level error rate below 3% using the AI Transkribus tool
• digitized transcriptions of approximately 232,000 pages of documents
• an intelligent model for summarizing key parts of historical texts and their subsequent presentation through a specifically designed application
• content analysis of these documents in their historical context in the form of conference presentations and publication outputs
